Ustauz Tesleem Abdul Azeez, an Islamic lecturer, has cautioned all Muslim students to be cautious of those cultures that go against Allah's and His Prophet's teachings (sunnah).
This was revealed today, February 5, 2023, the third day of the orientation session, which was organised by Ospoly MSSN Iree, Chapter.
He emphasized that Islam is a religion of peace that promotes a simple way of life for its followers and that any culture that causes hardship should be discarded.
According to the Islamic preacher who spoke extensively on the subject of "Islam and Culture," "Islam has great regard for other people's good customs if they don't interfere with our prosperity and decent lifestyle, especially those that Islam established."
In his words; "the Yoruba habit of bowing or prostrating to greet elders, is one of the cultures that contradicts the teaching of pure Islam, and should be firmly condemned because it contradicts the right practices of Islam."
In a similar vein, he counselled Muslims and provided clever guidelines for stopping and discouraging such behavioural culture, particularly among the elderly. He advised using intelligence, patience, and perseverance to Islamically reform such incorrect cultures and others of the same nature.
He gave numerous examples of cultures that do not oppose Islam, such as the typical Yoruba way of dressing as opposed to the devilish English way of dressing that exposes body parts. He also encouraged the good Yoruba way of eating and discouraged the consumption of meats and foods that are forbidden by Allah, such as eating of carnivores, giving out or consuming food with a polytheistic source or intention, and what a view.
Additionally, he warned Muslim men to desist from wearing female wear and Muslim women should refrain from wearing men's wear explaining the Prophetic saying of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), about how he (S.A.W) cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men i.e. expelled and kept away from the mercy of Allah.
He further advised the women not to use hair attachment while plaiting their hair nor involve in anything that can change their beautiful creation to an artificial one, quoting the Prophetic saying of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which goes thus: “May Allah curse the one who adds hair extensions and the one who has them added, the one who does tattoos and the one who has them done.”
He prohibited superfluous cultural events like burial rites. Taking pictures or making images was likewise forbidden, as stated by Allah through his prophet.
He added that the polygamous household is an excellent example of Islamic culture and that, because, of the diversity of women's natures and phenomena, the equality required of husbands toward their wives should be understood as justice rather than equality.
The guest of honour at the orientation program, Abu Latifah, the Imam of Iree (White Mosque), agreed with the lecturer's points about Islam and culture and briefly expanded on them, asserting that any culture that goes against Islamic teachings should be rejected, no matter how ignorantly it may be spread.
Moreover, one of the MSSN organizers, appreciate the lecturers, and pleaded with everyone to fear Allah, have faith in him, and refrain from introducing Islam into the immoral culture. He prayed for Allah's supernatural intervention so that we could follow his path without deviating from it. He also prayed for the Muslims to have the divine grace to follow all of Allah's and his prophet's teachings and to stop participating in a culture that is offensive to people.
